Summary

  • The Patient Care Technician (PCT) assists the registered nurse in the Emergency Department setting to provide direct care to the patients that follows the care plan and assists each patient to achieve and maintain the highest level of health and physical condition.

General Hours of Work

  • Daytime and Evening hours (includes weekend and holiday rotation)

Education and/or Experience

  • Completion of 75 hours CNA course preferred. High school diploma or GED preferred. Prior related work experience preferred. Attends 12 hours of in-service training yearly. Bi-lingual experience preferred but not required.

Certificate, Licenses, Registrations

  • Certified as a Nursing Assistant in the State of Iowa preferred but not required. Must obtain CPR certification within 3 months of hire date.

Essential Functions

  • Takes and records vital signs for assigned patients.

  • Responds to patient requests in a timely and compassionate manner.

  • Responsible in assisting with patient’s activities of daily living (ADL’s) as assigned.

  • Performs a variety of treatments within scope of position.

  • Assists with admission and discharge activities.

  • Implements physician’s orders within scope of position with accuracy and documents appropriately.

  • Works cooperatively with other members of the patient’s care team to deliver quality patient care.

  • Communicates pertinent patient information to members of patient’s care team as appropriate.

  • Maintains patient rooms in an orderly condition, changing bed linens, and provides routine cleaning tasks.

  • Assists with the orientation and training of new staff.

  • Works cooperatively with other hospital departments to ensure accurate, safe and timely communication of patient needs.

  • Assists in the maintenance of department equipment and supplies.

  • Assists with clerical duties as needed and/or as assigned.

  • Scope of position to include but not limited to: collecting body fluid specimens, obtaining patient vital signs, rounding on patients, answering call lights, assisting patients to the bathroom, removal of peripheral IVs, removal of urinary catheters, obtain blood sugar readings, assisting with splint application, setup of sterile field, cleaning used instruments, documenting patient information in the medical record, measuring patients height and weight.

  • Applies aseptic technique in patient care, following principles and policies detailed in the infection control manual. Displays proper care, utilization and charging of supplies and equipment used.

  • Gives prompt and efficient assistance to co-workers when indicated, offering cooperation and flexibility.

  • Maintains a clean/neat environment in working area. These areas may include, but not be limited to, patient rooms, terminals, nurse's stations, lounges, hallways, bathrooms, kitchen areas, elevators, and lobby areas. Participates in all cleaning activities as assigned including, dusting, washing, drying, mopping, disinfecting, vacuuming, moving furniture, and emptying trash.

  • Keeps assigned area fully stocked with supplies.

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
